10 Days Until Camp Opens
With less than a calendar month to go before baseball begins to smell new again we wanted to spend each day going through some of the best performances in 2016. Using game WPA for 15 starting pitcher and hitter performances we hope to be able to take you on a trip down memory lane each day.
This one should have been back at number 18, but I missed it like an idiot. All you Drew Smyly fans owe me big time. The Drewster through a legit gem in this game with seven innings of one-hit ball, and I bet you can guess how many bases that one hit went for! He struck out four and walked two against a lineup that featured a solid center, but weak flanks. The final score shows a blowout, but that can happen when you score five in the eighth. Most of this game was rather white-knuckle, though Smyly showed no effects of the drama. The Rays got into their pen late, and managed to protect their own nest for once with Boxberger and Jepsen holding it down, more or less.
