Asdrubal Cabrera is the Starting Shortstop
The Rays have announced their starting middle-infield plans. Asdrubal Cabrera will be the starting shortstop, according to Neil Solondz. Additionally, Kevin Cash said Nick Franklin will serve at second base, presumably in a timeshare alongside Logan Forsythe or one of the other utility infielders.
None of this should surprise. Last week, we covered the reasons why Cabrera was the favorite to win the shortstop job. In short: Cabrera is the everyday player of the two. Cabrera has also looked like the better defender of the two throughout the spring, although that could say more about Franklin’s awkward movements and inadequate arm than anything.
With two weeks until Opening Day, the Rays have a few other roster decisions to make, including how to fill out an injury-depleted rotation.
