Badler: Rays to Exceed Spending Cap

The Rays are one of four teams who intend to spend more than their international bonus pool, according to Baseball Americas Ben Badler, thus going over their cap for the second time in three years.

Badler, who also lists the Yankees and Red Sox as teams eager to accept the overage penalties, confirms an earlier report linking the Rays to shortstop Adrian Rondon. Badler adds that Rondon has an “advanced righthanded bat” and should stick at the position with “more steady than flashy defense.” Meanwhile, one new name added to the Rays’ shopping list is outfielder Jesus Sanchez. Sanchez has “impressed some scouts with his lefthanded bat” and projects as a left fielder, per Badler.

The international signing period opens on July 2.
