Balfour Adjusts | The Process Report

Balfour Adjusts

From Marc Topkin’s report this morning:

He sat in the clubhouse reviewing video and discovered two mechanical flaws he was able to correct, then, more importantly, adjusted his attitude, reinstalling the proper mindset and conviction to return to a more aggressive approach…He wouldn’t say what the mechanical adjustments were, but they “got me where I needed to be and allowed me to hit my spots and put the ball where I wanted to put it.”

Here is what Balfour looked like as he pitched to Hank Conger to lead off the 9th inning on Thursday night (click in lower right corner of image & click the – to slow the image down to desired speed):

A few observations:

  • Notice in the 2nd image how he takes a deep breath & his shoulders rise & fall before he gets into his motion. That was not present Thursday night.
  • His initial leg swing to start his motion appears shorter so he is not swinging side to side as he heads to his release point as he was Thursday night.
  • His tempo looked a tad quicker last night, even with the pronounced deep breath

Is it sustainable? That remains to be seen. The encouraging thing is Balfour was quick to go to video after a disastrous outing and immediately work on on what was ailing his efforts on the mound.
