Baseball America Praises Three Rays Prospects

Earlier today, Baseball America released its top-20 prospect list for the VSL and DSL. The list, authored by Ben Badler, includes three young Rays.

The most popular inclusion is David Rodriguez—one of Tampa Bay’s marquee signings in July 2012—who receives the nod for his defensive ability. Additionally, two newcomers are mentioned: left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarado and outfielder Manny Sanchez.

Badler notes that the teenage Alvarado has seen his stuff improve since signing with the organization in March 2012, and “now throws his fastball at 92-96 mph with heavy life.” Alvarado led the VSL in wild pitches, according to the article, so he needs to refine his control. Sanchez, meanwhile, is an 18-year-old outfielder listed at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds. Badler writes that Sanchez features grade-70 raw power, and last year “did a solid job of controlling the strike zone.”
