During the off-season, the organization added to a strong core of players at Durham by signing Joaquin Benoit, who was coming off major arm surgery, to a minor league contact and signed Dan Johnson, who had spent all of 2009 playing in Japan. That collection of names has been a large part of the reason why the Rays have been able to defy the pre-season prognosticators and their presence has become even more important in the second half of the season as Grant Balfour, Carlos Pena, Wade Davis, and Jeff Niemann have all gone down with injuries in recent weeks.
