Brandon Gomes Demoted

The Rays have demoted Brandon Gomes, according to Bill Chastain.

The decision to remove a reliever from the roster was a given. Alex Cobb is scheduled to return on Wednesday, and Cesar Ramos figures to rejoin the bullpen once that happens. In the interim, Kevin Kiermaier provides Joe Maddon with extra flexibility off the bench.

As for Gomes, he’ll head to familiar Durham and wait on another opportunity. The next one could be the last one for him in St. Pete, as he’s likely to enter next season without options. Perhaps the Rays stay true to their MO and overlook performance in the name of depth—see: future Club Bennett member Josh Lueke—but Gomes has disappointed the past three seasons, to the tune of a 5.49 ERA and 1.7 home-run-per-nine rate. To his credit, he posted solid strikeout-to-walk ratios and has a track record of being effective against right-handed hitters. The upside is limited, however, and given the relief depth within the system, he shouldn’t be considered a priority.
