Brandon Gomes to the DL; Josh Lueke Recalled

Brandon Gomes is headed to the disabled list with a strained lat muscle, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.

Gomes owns one of the weirdest stat lines on the staff. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is strong, and yet his surface-level numbers are poor because of two terrible outings, in which he allowed six runs and recorded three outs. Lately Gomes has appeared sporadically. He threw just 12 pitches over the past week, and faced one batter in each of his three most recent appearances. It’s unclear when Gomes suffered the injury.

Josh Lueke is up from Durham and figures to take Gomes’ role in the bullpen. This looked like a make-or-break year for Lueke from the onset, and so far he’s risen to the occasion. In addition to striking out 29 batters in 19 innings, Lueke’s fastball has been clocked in the upper-90s on multiple occasions. If Lueke carries his early-season success over to the majors it’s possible, though perhaps not probable, that Gomes could return to Durham at the end of his DL stint.
