Brooks Conrad Elects Free Agency

Here’s some news you can use, fresh from the International League’s transactions page: Brooks Conrad has opted to become a minor-league free agent.

The Rays pursued Conrad last winter, but the utility man chose to sign with the Brewers instead, citing playing time concerns. Milwaukee threw Conrad on the waiver wire after a horrid start to the season, and the Longoria-less Rays took the opportunity to claim him. Conrad got off to a good start with the Rays before entering a lengthy slump. Tampa Bay removed Conrad from the 40-man roster in August and did not bring him back once rosters expanded, all but ensuring the relationship would end once the season ended.

A good rule of thumb is not to trust a man nicknamed “Raw Dog” with a glove, and Conrad proved this parlance correct. His defense left much to be desired while his long swing produced more whiffs than extra-base hits. Conrad departs the Rays system with a career .172/.213/.362 line and 27 strikeouts in 61 plate appearances.
