Cafardo: Rays Made “Very Competitive” Offer to David Ross

The Rays were among the teams that showed the most interest last offseason in catcher David Ross, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Cafardo categorizes the Rays offer as “very competitive” though in the end Ross opted for a two-year deal with the Red Sox worth more than $6 million. Despite his advanced age, Ross is known as the best backup catcher in the league thanks to a solid all-around game. Had Ross signed with the Rays , he would have presumably entered a timeshare with Jose Molina, while Jose Lobaton headed elsewhere via trade or waivers.

Instead Ross is hitting .207/.303/.448 while splitting time behind the plate with Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
