Draft Prospect: Roman Quinn | The Process Report

Draft Prospect: Roman Quinn

Baseball America posted another experts mock draft today. The entire thing is free and readable here, but there is one player mention I wanted to expand on. Take it away, John Manuel:

31. RAYS (John): The Rays’ hearts just went pitter-patter over the thought of getting C.J. Cron . . . too bad. They could use a power bat and might give Indiana slugger Alex Dickerson a long look. With this record bonanza, the Rays have to take signability into account, but I’m also expecting them to takes some risks on players with upside. I’ll bank on them getting Florida prep speedster Roman Quinn a bit later and take Arkansas prep righty Dillon Howard here. Their track record of developing pitchers has to be attractive to tough signs like Howard, who is committed to Arkansas.

I’m not going to focus on Howard, but rather Quinn. I went right to BA’s top 200 list to see what they said, and here is the standout sentence: “The fastest player in the BA Top 200, he’s a true top-of-the-scale runner with game-changing speed. “ For now, Quinn is an infielder with a Florida State University commitment. He isn’t a big guy, at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, but has taken up switch-hitting and could wind up in center field. With that kind of athleticism, he does sound like Rays material.
