Draft Prospects: Dan Vogelbach and Josh Osich

Frankie Piliere is a friend of the site that dates back a few years, his most recent mock draft has the Rays taking a few familiar names, and one big one previously unmentioned. Along with Joe Ross (discussed before) and Brian Goodwin (the former UNC outfielder with Jacque Jones comparisons), Piliere has the Rays grabbing Dan Vogelbach.

Let’s just get this out of the way: Vogelbach has back—lots of it, just check out this video—but he can also hit the baseball like nobody’s business. Another local product, Vogelbach enters the draft from Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Florida and has a commitment to the University of Florida. Vogelbach has some of the best power in the draft, but isn’t an all or nothing hitter, either, as he can make contact and reportedly has a sound approach. Porcine body and all, he is a player worth watching, because he could develop into a heck of a hitter, should he keep his weight in check.

On a related note, Piliere was in the house for Oregon State pitcher Josh Osich’s no-hitter and has relayed that the Rays were there in full force. Osich is a lefty with good velocity and a stellar changeup. He needs to work on a breaking pitch and he has undergone Tommy John surgery already, but he could be another Tampa Bay target.
