Former Rays Employee’s SABR Presentation Highlights Dan Johnson & Jack Cust

Graham Goldbeck, who once worked for the Rays but now works for Sportsvision, made a presentation during the weekend’s SABR conference in Arizona. Luckily for those not in attendance, Baseball America‘s Matt Eddy put together a tremendous recap of the event.

Much of Goldbeck’s presentation supports conventional wisdom. Batters hit for greater power when they pull the ball, pitchers have more success when contact is made deeper over the plate, and so on. Goldbeck did mention two players with Rays connections by name when talking about this last point, as both Dan Johnson and Jack Cust are examples of batters with “rigid” swings—meaning, in this case, they often made contact at the same level of depth, leaving them vulnerable to other pitches, etc.. You often hear this stuff described in scouting circles as bat control.

There’s one other ex-Ray mentioned in the recap: Randy Choate. You’ll have to click through to find out why.
