Game #105 Lineups and Outlook

That trade deadline was pretty fun, yeah? For the first time in forever the Rays were clearly sellers and that’s exactly what they did. I’ll have more on this as time allows, but I love how they were able to get a nice piece for today and a few more for tomorrow to hopefully keep this team in contention over all terms. It is sad to see Matty Moore go, but hopefully we have not seen the last of Steve Pearce as the team could clearly use the Lakeland Launcher next year with a few holes yet to be filled. Let’s save all that talk for later, though, and dig into today’s game.

I’ve got the Rays as a solid favorite today as Matt Andriese climbs back aboard the horse for his first start in some time. He’ll square off against the Royals hot-headed fireballer Yordano Ventura. Hosmer, Morales and Gordon look like the guys that Andriese will need to be careful with in what I would anticipate will be a low-scoring game. The Rays have a few nice matchups today with Dickerson and Miller looking like the best bets for offense.

Both teams are going with the three-man bench so that they can have access to an extra arm, as needed. The Royals have a couple of nice defenders with oodles of speed on theirs while the Rays bench contains some nice defensive flexibility in the event a switch is needed. It wasn’t that long ago that the Royals pen was a feared beast, but with Wade Davis on the disabled list it is now a shell of it’s former self. Building a great pen can have it’s benefits, but longevity is hardly one of them. It’s a big reason that teams should be aggressive in turning current good relievers into future good anything else, if possible.
