Hellickson To Start Season on DL

Rays’ starter Jeremy Hellickson is expected to miss the first six-to-eight weeks of the upcoming season after undergoing minor elbow surgery according to Roger Mooney. The surgery to remove some loose articles in his elbow was performed by team doctor Dr. Koko Eaton last week.

It was an up-and-down season for Hellickson in 2013. His traditional stats took a dive while posting strong supporting numbers. He was briefly demoted to the minor leagues in August before returning in September. Throughout the struggles, the team, player, and agent maintained that he was heathly. Hellickson avoided arbitration this winter by accepting a $3.625 salary and was expected to slot somewhere in the middle of Tampa Bay’s rotation. With this news, Jake Odorizzi becomes the top internal option. Last week it was rumored that the club had interest in free agent A.J. Burnett.
