Heyman: Rays “Have Checked In” on Mariners Hitters

The Rays have “checked in” on the Mariners hitters, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. It’s the first official rumor of the deadline season (though there was a Brewers blog that suggested the Rays had interest in outfielder Norichika Aoki a few days ago). Heyman doesn’t specify which hitters the Rays have asked about, but the reference comes after mentioning Kendrys Morales and Raul Ibanez.

The switch-hitting Morales, a popular perceived target in the past, is essentially replicating his 2012 season by hitting .280/.340/.462. Ibanez, meanwhile, is in the midst of a surprising season, in which he’s already belted 22 home runs. Presumably Mike Morse, who is currently on the disabled list, could come up in talks as well. He, like Morales and Ibanez, is a free agent after the season.
