Jake Hager Receives More Praise for Being a Baseball Rat

Jake Hager is one of the organization’s top shortstop prospects. Though there are no guarantees the former first-round pick will stick at the position long-term, there’s no denying the 20-year-old’s baseball aptitude and work ethic. It’s no surprise then to see Hager mentioned in Jason Parks’ latest piece ($), on less-than-pure shortstop prospects, nor is it shocking to see Hager lauded for his intangibles:

Hager is a prototypical Gestalt prospect, whose overall skill set is greater than the sum of his individual tools. I have many sources that question his ability to stick at shortstop at the highest level, but the same ones are quick to point out that you can’t discount or write off this kid in any way.

It’s perhaps worth noting that Hager, 20, is batting .280/.326/.360 in the Florida State League, where the average hitter is roughly 23 years old and owns a .258/.326/.379 line.
