The Rays made two expected moves this afternoon as they activated Desmond Jennings from the disabled list today and have optioned reliever Brandon Gomes back down to Durham. Gomes was used in Saturday’s loss but was still the eighth pitcher in a bullpen that barely finds use for its lowest leverage reliever, Cesar Ramos, these days.
While Jennings was out, Wil Myers and Sam Fuld split duties in center field and hit .200/.283/.275 while driving in five runs. With Jennings back in the lineup, Fuld can resume his utility duties and spot starts against lefties while Myers can return to playing the corner outfield as well as serving as the DH while Luke Scott is on the disabled list. The new bench most nights will be Fuld, Jason Bourgeois, Sean Rodriguez, and whichever catcher is not starting that night leaving the team a bit light off the bench in the later innings.
Lastly, it was announced on Sunday that Ryan Roberts had cleared waivers and accepted an assignment back to Durham.
