Jesse Crain Disabled; Kevin Kiermaier Recalled

The Rays have made another roster move before the regular season (technically) ends: They’ve placed Jesse Crain on the 60-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder Kevin Kiermaier from Durham, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.

Kiermaier gained helium this season as a nice sleeper prospect, and the Rays were going to add him to the 40-man roster this winter either way. For now, he’s around to help out in case of emergency. Defense and baserunning are Kiermaier’s bread-and-butter, though his line-drive approach at the plate makes him more than an offensive zero.

It’s worth noting that Kiermaier is the second member of the Rays’ 2010 draft class to reach the majors, albeit the first to do so with Tampa Bay. Derek Dietrich, whom the Rays traded to the Marlins in the Yunel Escobar deal, made his big-league debut earlier in the season.
