Joel Peralta’s New Trick | The Process Report

Joel Peralta’s New Trick

Joel Peralta is a man of many tricks. In the past, the wily righty has used the quick pitch good effect, and this season he’s showing off another technique to take advantage of inattentive batters.

Above are two screenshots from last night’s appearance. On the left is Peralta’s typical arm slot (high three-quarters), and on the right is the adjusted arm slot (not quite sidearm, but noticeably lower).

Generally speaking, you don’t want your pitches altering their release points; it’s hard enough to locate from one slot, let alone multiple slots. But Peralta has shown that he understands portion control in the past, and he’s always had a Caribbean Series feel to his pitching anyway. In that respect, the arm-slot manipulation is just another tool in his box.
