Karns Joins the Rays

With Drew Smyly shut down for the remainder of the season, the Rays have recalled Nate Karns from Durham to join the rotation.

Karns, acquired in the Jose Lobaton trade, will make his Tampa Bay debut this weekend. He features a good fastball-breaking ball combination, though his command, changeup, and age led many to project him as a reliever. He joins Curt Casali, Steve Geltz, and Brandon Gomes—or a potential backup catcher and two middle-relief hopefuls—as the Rays’ true September call-ups. David DeJesus was also activated from the disabled list, meaning the Rays now technically have a 30-man roster.
