Luke Scott to DL

Before today’s game, the Rays placed Luke Scott on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms  retroactive to Thursday and activated Brandon Gomes off the 60-day disabled list while replacing Gomes with Jesse Crain.

Gomes is likely up until Desmond Jennings is deemed ready, which could be as soon as Monday. Until then, Joe Maddon will be running with a two-man bench that includes the second catcher, Matt Joyce on nights when a lefty is starting, Sean Rodriguez when a righty is starting, and an extra outfielder such as Jason Bourgeois or Kelly Johnson.

Gomes provides extra depth for the bullpen for the weekend and can be optioned back down to Durham to open up the roster spot for Jennings. With Scott out until at least August 30th, the rumblings of mutual interest in Delmon Young become relevant.

Jesse Crain is now not eligible to return until September 3rd August 29th, at the earliest, which is unfortunate as both Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney have been inconsistent in the later innings in recent weeks.
