Matt Moore Done for the Season

Matt Moore will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to the team’s official site.

The usual recovery period from the operation takes 12 months. There are exceptions, however, where a pitcher needs more time before getting back on the mound. That means the earliest you can expect to see Moore back on the mound is mid-April 2015. Even then, the Rays will have to decide how they intend to break him back into the rotation. In the past, teams like the Braves and Nationals have welcomed elbow-surgery survivors by using them in the bullpen or shutting them down early.

Moore is one of three Rays starting pitchers on the disabled list, joining Alex Cobb and Jeremy Hellickson. Hellickson, it should be noted, is expected back around June 1.
