Odorizzi Tweaks Mechanics

From Baseball America’s Hot Sheet:

Jake Odorizzi, rhp, Rays: Odorizzi has adjusted his delivery so that he brings his hands above his head instead of keeping them down at his waist before finding his balance point. The same adjustment helped Matt Moore’s fastball command, and the Rays hope it will do the same for Odorizzi. But there will be some growing pains, like this week, when the 23-year-old allowed nine runs in 8 1/3 innings at Triple-A Durham.

Without seeing the new delivery in action, it sounds similar to what a few big-league pitchers (including Ervin Santana, Francisco Liriano, and Wade Davis) do. It’s worth keeping in mind as time burns on.

Update: Here is video of Odorizzi’s new delivery, along with a look at the old one. It does appear the hands-over-head tweak is the only alteration. This could, in theory, help Odorizzi with his rhythm, and prevent him from rushing to the plate; thus improving his location.
