Olney: Rays “Making Progress” on Retaining Jose Molina

The Rays are progressing toward re-signing Jose Molina, according to Buster Olney.

Molina, who turns 39 in June, spent the previous two seasons in St. Petersburg. His calling card remains defense, as he’s a good framer, marksman, and staff handler. Obviously Molina doesn’t add much offensively, and his limited mobility leads to a fair amount of passed balls and wild pitches. Still, he brings value to the table and is familiar with the Rays and their staff.

Olney notes the deal could be for two seasons, although it’s unknown whether the second year would be guaranteed or included as an option. Likewise, it’s unclear if the Rays would then check out of the catching market, or if they would pursue an upgrade over Jose Lobaton.
