Potential Draftee of Interest: Ryne Stanek

University of Arkansas right-hander Ryne Stanek entered the spring with a chance to go number-one overall. Instead Stanek’s stock has slipped just a bit thanks to a rough start to the year. The Rays, doing due diligence if nothing else, have reportedly checked in on Stanek lately (along with Travis Demeritte, who we covered on Wednesday). It’s a situation reminiscent of the team’s interest in Matt Purke a few years back.

Stanek is listed at 6-foot-4 though his wingspan may exceed that. He delivers the ball from a three-quarters arm slot with a strong, quick arm. Unfortunately the delivery looks top-heavy, and he lands on a stiff front leg. At his best he throws two potential plus-to-double-plus offerings in his fastball and slider, along with a third possibly average offering in his changeup. There are command concerns, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Stanek’s name mentioned as a pitcher who may wind up in the bullpen—especially if his stuff wavers as it has this season. Still it’s possible, if not probable that he’ll be off the board before the Rays pick at 21.

Excerpts from the experts

Jason Parks (March, $): “Delivery and arsenal fit relief profile. First-round arm, but not top tier for me.”

Nick Faleris (March, $) “Stuff a full grade down across the board from where I saw him mid-spring, 2012.”

Franchise history at the position

In addition to David Price, the Rays have drafted four collegiate starters in the first-three rounds during R.J. Harrison’s tenure as scouting director: Josh Butler (second, 2006), Will Kline (second, 2007), Jacob Thompson (second, 2010), and Grayson Garvin (supplemental, 2011). Only Butler has reached the majors, and that came in a short stint with Milwaukee after he was traded for Gabe Gross. Jeff Niemann represents the high point in the pre-Harrison era; Wade Townsend, Jon Switzer, Dewon Brazelton, and Chris Mason represent the less-high points.
