Potential Draftee of Interest: Travis Demeritte

Travis Demeritte is another South Carolina commitment who should be on the board when the Rays pick—possibly multiple times.

A prep third baseman from Georgia, there are few concerns about Demeritte’s ability to stick at the hot corner. He’s an ultra-athletic defender with a plus-to-plus-plus-arm, depending on the source.(Demeritte has touched 92 mph off the mound before.) At the plate Demeritte bats righty with a fast bat and the potential to hit for power, though his swing is tailored for line drives at the moment.

Excerpts from the experts

Jason Parks (November): “He’s a likely candidate to over-perform projection; future major leaguer; will be around game forever.”

Franchise history at the position

Under R.J. Harrison’s watch the Rays have selected one high-school third baseman in the first-three rounds of the draft, that being Tyler Goeddel (supplemental, 2011). None of the previous three scouting directors in franchise history (Dan Jennings, Cam Bonifay, and Tim Wilken) selected a prep third baseman that high in the draft.
