Potential Draftees of Interest: Final Wrap

With the draft starting on Thursday night here’s a brief roundup of the latest players mentioned with or linked to the Rays through various mock drafts, including those done by Keith Law and Kiley McDaniel.

Ian Clarkin
Position: Left-handed pitcher
School: James Madison High School (San Diego, California); University of San Diego commitment
Basically: Southpaw with a big leg kick and the chance for a solid three-pitch arsenal.

Jon Denney
Position: Catcher
School: Yukon High School (Yukon, Oklahoma);
Basically: Big offensive potential but might have to move from the position.

Hunter Dozier
Position: Shortstop/third base
School: Stephen F. Austin State University
Basically: Good power potential that’ll come in handy if/when he shifts off shortstop.

Josh Hart
Position: Center field
School: Parkview High School (Lilburn, Georgia); Georgia Tech commitment
Basically: Fast bat and likely to stick in center.

Eric Jagielo
Position: Third base?
School: University of Notre Dame University
Basically: Unclear defensive home but has the chance to be an above-average hitter.

Billy McKinney
Position: Outfielder
School: Plano West High School (Plano, Texas); Texas Christian University commitment
Basically: A hitter.

Oscar Mercado
Position: Shortstop
School: Gaither High School (Tampa, Florida); Florida State commitment
Basically: Plenty of glove but concerns about his ability to hit.

Dustin Peterson
Position: Shortstop
School: Gilbert High School (Gilbert, Arizona); Arizona State commitment
Basically: Nice, simple swing although he’s unlikely to stick at the position.

Cody Reed
Position: Left-handed pitcher
School: Northwest Mississippi Community College (Senatobia, Mississippi); Ole Miss commitment
Basically: Big boy with good athleticism, good velocity, and a good breaking ball.

Riley Unroe
Position: Shortstop
School: Desert Ridge High School (Mesa, Arizona); Southern Cal commitment
Basically: A switch-hitter who figures to play an up-the-middle position with enough bat to slot in near the top of the order.

Austin Wilson
Position: Corner outfielder
School: Stanford
Basically: Athletically gifted but questions about his hit tool and hitting mechanics persist.
