Questioning The Fuentes Hate | The Process Report

Questioning The Fuentes Hate

After writing my earlier piece on Brian Fuentes, I read over the DRaysBay thread and the reaction startled me. There seems to be distaste towards Fuentes and I’m not entirely sure why. There are concerns about his game. Concerns that don’t translate through into his surface statistics. Generally – and I do mean on a general basis – this conceals the flags enough that folks overlook or are completely ignorant of the flaws. With Fuentes, that does not seem to be the case.

I hesitate to reprint the below comparison without disclaiming that I am not suggesting Fuentes and Rafael Soriano are equal or close to it. Soriano is a vastly superior pitcher. It’s just not entirely reflected in the surface statistics:

Fuentes: 2008-2010: 3.15 ERA, 165.2 IP, 9.5 SO/9, 2.65 SO/BB, 0.8 HR/9
Soriano: 2007-2009: 2.95 ERA, 161.2 IP, 10.5 SO/9, 3.69 SO/BB, 1.1 HR/9

Maybe it’s money-based, to which I can sympathize – I’m the same doofus who was unsure if spending that money on Soriano was the best usage – but without any figures from which to work it’s hard to get too antsy over the price.

After reading through the DRB comments, I think the concern is almost entirely financial… and a smidgen of uncertainty about his prowess against righties. (Disclaimer: Not saying I am in this club).

Or it could just be his lack of grit…
