Rays Acquire Catcher Juan Apodaca from Rangers

Two days after trading catcher Robinson Chirinos to the Rangers, the Rays have hooked up with Texas over a backstop again. This time the Rays are the ones receiving as they’ll get minor-league catcher Juan Apodaca in exchange for cash considerations, according to the Associated Press.

Apodaca, who turns 27 in a few months, figures to serve as Durham’s backup. Known for his strong catch-and-throw skills, he doesn’t offer much else and should not factor into the big-league picture. Previously the Bulls had been using long-time organizational soldier Craig Albernaz as their Plan B behind the plate.
