Rays Acquire Jesse Crain for Future Considerations

Update: Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports the deal is done. The White Sox will receive future considerations, which seems like a fancy way of saying something dependent on if/how Crain pitches for Tampa Bay. For now he will remain on the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team moved Brandon Gomes to the 60-day DL

There are Jesse Crain rumors out there involving the Rays and the terms “three-team deal” and “complicated.” In other words, Crain’s future destination is unknown, and so is the probable return. At any rate, Crain is interesting enough to merit a post.

Crain throws hard, with a fastball routinely clocked in the mid-to-upper-90s. He’s not just a one-trick pony, however. Crain throws two breaking balls and, at times, a splitter as well. His delivery has some funk to it. Crain’s arm action evokes bow-and-arrow comparisons, and he releases from a high three-quarters arm slot. (Focus on Crain’s glove and his tendency to fall off after delivering the ball and you might mistake him for Joel Peralta.) He’s a flyball pitcher who lives up in the zone with his heater and is able to get away with it thanks to velocity and deception. The stats are pretty, too: Sub-1 ERA, a strikeout-to-walk ratio exceeding 4.00, and so on.

Unfortunately Crain does have flaws. Most noticeably he’s on the disabled list with a strained throwing shoulder, and his recent attempt to return to the mound failed. He’s also a free agent at the end of the season, which lowers the asking price and the potential impact. Of course, Andrew Friedman knows all of this and more. The Rays are highly unlikely to part with a promising player for a reliever; especially a hurt one, especially a rental.

That doesn’t mean acquiring Crain would be no big deal—he’s arguably the top reliever available, and he’d add yet another high-leverage weapon to the bullpen. Just that this deal has more layers to it than your typical deadline swap.
