Rays Acquire Wesley Wright

The Rays have claimed left-handed reliever Wesley Wright off waivers from the Astros, according to a team release.

Wright is a small southpaw whose fastball sits in the low-90s. Though he’s posted reverse splits this season, his multi-year numbers against left-handed batters (.218/.293/.314 since 2011) indicate he’s equipped to handle specialist duty. The Astros, mired in a rebuild, had little reason to micromanage Wright’s outings. That should change with Tampa Bay, and as a result Wright may see his raw statistics improve even if he doesn’t get better as a pitcher. Adding Wright could be more than a short-term move, too: He has two seasons of team control remaining.

Per the team, Wright will join the club before Tuesday’s game. Presumably Josh Lueke will be optioned to the minors to make room for the newcomer. The Rays will have to make a few other roster moves this week when Alex Cobb and Matt Moore return. Because Cobb is on the 60-day disabled list, the Rays will have to clear a 40-man spot as well, which could be accomplished by designating Jason Bourgeois for assignment.
