Rays Activate David Price, Option Ryan Roberts

As expected, the Rays have activated David Price from the disabled list and optioned Ryan Roberts to Durham, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.

Price returns after missing the past six weeks due to a strained triceps in his throwing arm. He replaces Alex Colome in the rotation, as Chris Archer will stay for the time being, and perhaps until Alex Cobb is available again (though the timeframe for that remains vague). Last year’s American League Cy Young winner started nine games for the Rays prior to suffering his injury, and will make his 10th appearance of the season on Tuesday night against the Astros.

Roberts homered twice on Monday night, all the while showing off altered hitting mechanics. He’ll head back to Durham anyway, as one big performance doesn’t put him ahead of Sean Rodriguez (who had a big night himself). Roberts could rejoin the team before the typical 10-day window expires if the Rays place Evan Longoria on the disabled list. That scenario appears less likely than it was when the Rays recalled Roberts days earlier, however. Expect Roberts to return to the majors again later in the season.
