Rays Activate Hellickson; Trade Ramsey; Sign Rondon

Updating a few roster moves.

  • Jeremy Hellickson will make his season debut tonight, as the Rays activated him (and Cesar Ramos) and optioned Vince Belnome and Jeff Beliveau to the minors. Erik Bedard will slide to the bullpen to make room in the rotation.
  • Hellickson’s return is welcomed. He’s a well-rounded pitcher who, in addition to having a good feel for his craft, understands how to shut down the running game and field his position. The key to his game is locating his pitches and changing speeds and eye levels. Hellickson has shown he can do those things in the past, so there’s hope for a better 2014 than 2013.
  •  The Rays made another trade on Monday, sending relief prospect Matt Ramsey to the Marlins for some extra international bonus pool money. Ramsey has the chance to be a big-league pitcher in time, thanks to a power fastball-curveball combination, though he’s battled with control issues.
  • The additional bonus pool money means the Rays won’t face overage penalties after signing Adrian Rondon—one of the top international prospects out there—to a deal worth nearly $3 million. The Rays announced the signing on Monday, Rondon’s 16th birthday.
