Rays Activate Smyly, Loney

The Rays made more roster moves on Thursday, because of course they did.

Long transaction log made short: C.J. Riefenhauser was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to shoulder woes, Mikie Mahtook was recalled, then optioned back to Durham after the game (along with Allan Dykstra), and both Drew Smyly and James Loney were activated from the disabled list.

Loney’s return comes maybe a day or two earlier than expected, but otherwise this crop featured no surprises. Riefenhauser looked hurt, with his fastball sitting in the mid-to-upper-80s as opposed to the low-90s, and Smyly had been confirmed earlier in the day as Friday’s starter.

The Rays will need to make at least one other transaction in the coming days, when Alex Colome returns from his own rehab stint. Presumably Matt Andriese will head to Durham at that time. Additionally, the Rays could look to add a left-handed reliever, with Jordan Norberto being the odds-on favorite if they stay in-house.
