Rays Claim Pedro Figueroa

The Rays have claimed left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa off waivers from the Athletics, according to Ken Rosenthal.

Figueroa becomes the second former A’s southpaw added by the Rays in the past week, joining Jordan Norberto. Both enjoyed success in 2012, but fell from grace for various reasons. In Figueroa’s case, he remained too raw. To his credit, the Dominican native boasts a mid-90s fastball and two secondary offerings, including a hard slider with two-plane movement. On the debit side, his location is shaky and his long arm action gives right-handed batters a good look at the ball.

Since Tampa Bay has a full 40-man roster, they’ll have to clear a spot for Figueroa. Presumably, that means a redundant arm (perhaps Jeff Beliveau) will be designated for assignment. Figueroa, who is without an option, should compete alongside Cesar Ramos, Mark Lowe, and Josh Lueke for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.
