Rays Complete Opening Day Roster; Add Shelley Duncan, Jamey Wright, Juan Carlos Oviedo; Designate Stephen Vogt, Robinson Chirinos

The Rays have completed their opening day roster in compliance with the 3 pm deadline.

Luke Scott will open the season on the 15-day disabled list. Because Scott recently played in a minor-league spring training game, not a big-league one, the stint is retroactive to March 24. That means he’ll be eligible to return on April 8—a week into the season.

With Scott out of action the Rays opted to add Shelly Duncan to the 40-man roster—an interesting decision, if only since it comes in favor of Brandon Guyer. Duncan is a big man whose value stems largely from his ability to run into one every now and again. Through 933 career plate appearances he’s been roughly a league-average hitter. Not ideal for a bat-only player but he does give the Rays another right-handed option, and seems likely to get a few starts over the opening week. Duncan is out of options and will have to pass through waivers if the Rays elect to send him to the minors.

To make room for Duncan and Jamey Wright, Tampa Bay designated Stephen Vogt and Robinson Chirinos for assignment. Vogt made the opening day roster last season but went 0-for-25 during his various big-league stints, so his removal from the 40-man roster isn’t too surprising. After all, the fastest way out of a job is being an overage, bat-only prospect who shows no ability to hit big-league pitching. Chirinos, who came over in the Matt Garza trade, missed last season due to concussion-related issues. Both will have to pass through waivers in order to remain with the organization.

As expected, Tampa Bay also added Juan Carlos Oviedo to the 40-man roster and transferred him to the 60-day disabled list, meaning he doesn’t count toward the limit.

Now trade a low level prospect to the Mariners for Wells and release Duncan again.
