Rays Decline Juan Oviedo’s Option

The Rays elected not to exercise their club option on Juan Oviedo, according to the team’s official site.

Oviedo signed with the club last January, but missed the season while rehabbing after Tommy John surgery. It was anticipated that he might return in 2014 and compete for the ninth-inning role. Instead, the Rays—who were presumably not satisfied with his progress enough to guarantee a contract for next season—will sift through the free-agent market for a new closer. There are plenty of options, including another pair of injured relievers (Joel Hanrahan and Ryan Madson) and two guys who lost their gigs late in the season (Chris Perez and Edward Mujica). There is also the potential to bring back Oviedo on a non-guaranteed contract.

In other news, the Rays activated all the players from the 60-day disabled list.
