Rays Demote Jake Odorrizi, Recall Alex Colome

The Rays have optioned Jake Odorizzi back to Durham and recalled Alex Colome, according to a team release.

Odorizzi started two games, most recently a four-inning mess against the Marlins. Although he was due to start on Saturday against the Indians, the Rays have chosen to use one of the other starters from Durham—presumably Chris Archer. In the interim the move allows them to carry another fresh relief arm. Odorizzi pitched as advertised for the most part. His control, athleticism, and deep arsenal were on display. Unfortunately, so were his issues with command and the lack of an outpitch. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if he sees the majors again this season.

Colome is the third Durham starter to receive a promotion in May. He’s received attention around these parts recently for his performance and improvement on the mound. Along with a good arm Colome brings questions about his future role. He’s simplified his mechanics this season, however, it’s too early to know whether the changes have improved his command enough for him to stick in the rotation long term.
