Rays Demote Riefenhauser; Activate Oviedo

The Rays have optioned C.J. Riefenhauser to Durham and activated Juan Carlos Oviedo from the 15-day disabled list.

Riefenhauser debuted over the weekend, appearing in two games and showing signs of being a future big-league contributor. True to the scouting reports, he relied on his fastball-slider combination and displayed good control over the pitches. Factor in Riefenhauser’s funky delivery, which includes a closed landing and low arm slot, and he’s got the chance to develop into a two-way middle reliever.

Oviedo, meanwhile, is in like to make his Rays debut despite spending the past season-plus with the organization. He missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and opened the season on the disabled list after visa issues delayed his springtime arrival. In the past, Oviedo relied on a mid-90s fastball, changeup that he uses with righties and lefties alike, and slider.
