Rays Designate Bobby Wilson
The Rays made a few roster moves following Thursday night’s defeat.
Two of the transactions involved relievers, with Andrew Bellatti hitting the disabled list and Preston Guilmet returning to Durham. The third and most surprising swap involved backup catcher Bobby Wilson, who was designated for assignment. Three pitchers took those vacated spots on the roster: southpaws Enny Romero and C.J. Riefenhauser, and Friday night’s starter Matt Andriese.
Observant readers will note those moves leave the Rays without a true backup catcher, though apparently Jake Elmore is set to serve in that capacity for a night. After that? Seems like Curt Casali will get the call. The bad news is Casali hit .205/.326/.348 in Durham and couldn’t beat out Wilson in spring; the good news is Wilson was hitting .145/.203/.145, so Casali could lose 50 points off each slash line and still be a marked improvement at the plate.
Wilson should clear waivers and report to Durham in the coming days.
