Rays Designate Dane De La Rosa for Assignment

On Tuesday night the Rays started their roster jockeying. On Wednesday they finished by designating Dane De La Rosa for assignment.

De La Rosa joined the 40-man roster prior to the start of the 2011 season. His story was one of perseverance: from blase minor leaguer to real estate agent to organizational sleeper. Built like an aircraft carrier, De La Rosa had the potential to hit the mid-to-upper-90s and complemented the heat with a power curve. Unfortunately location issues and velocity instability undercut his ability to make it at the big-league level. It’s unknown whether De La Rosa’s involvement in the Sean Rodriguez hand-breaking incident played into the Rays’ decision.

In a corresponding move, Luke Scott’s one-year deal was officially announced. The deal is worth $2.75 million. The Rays declined Scott’s $6 million option earlier in the offseason, opting instead to pay him a $1 million buyout.
