Rays Designate Grant Balfour | The Process Report

Rays Designate Grant Balfour

Grant Balfour was designated for assignment following Saturday’s poor showing. In a corresponding move, the Rays purchased the contract of Brandon Gomes from Durham.

Balfour, who last spring signed a two-year deal worth $12 million to return to Tampa Bay, appeared in six games this season. He showed poor control of worse stuff, and failed to strike out any of the 21 batters he faced. It’s unknown how much Balfour’s absence during spring training, or the subsequent death of his father, affected his performance, but you couldn’t blame him if he made baseball a lesser priority.

We wish Balfour the best heading forward, on and off the field.
