Rays Designate Molina for Assignment

The Rays have designated catcher Jose Molina for assignment.

Molina, owed $2.75 million in 2015, will receive the money no matter what happens, be it a trade or release. He finishes his Rays career after three seasons and 281 appearances, precisely 100 more than he tallied with any of his other four clubs. Given his age, it’s possible Molina’s playing days are over; here’s (selfishly) hoping he transitions to coaching sooner than later in order to preserve his long-term health.

Molina’s departure means the Rays could enter the season with Curt Casali as Ryan Hanigan’s backup. If so, Casali would represent a stunning contrast from Molina; after all, he didn’t hit in ’14 and accumulates much of his defensive value from his receiving rather than an arm that isn’t as strong as it used to be and substandard blocking abilities.
