Rays Draft Cameron Varga, Brent Honeywell

With their second and third picks in the draft, the Rays took a pair of right-handed pitchers.

Cameron Varga, an overage high-school prospect with a North Carolina commitment, was the club’s second-round choice. Varga missed time this season with biceps tendinitis, but his upside obscured that red flag. He is well-built and has the potential for two plus pitches, in his fastball and curveball, according to MLB.com. Nick J. Faleris  adds“he’ll also show a low-80s change with some fade.”

Brent Honeywell was the third selection of the night, as part of the second Competitive Balance round. The JUCO product can touch 95 mph and apparently throws a screwball, which is considered his best secondary pitch, per Clint Longenecker of Baseball America.

The draft will resume this afternoon, with its conclusion coming tomorrow.
