Rays Draft Chris Betts

The Rays drafted Woodrow Wilson High (California) catcher Chris Betts with pick no. 52.

Betts’ main selling points are his bat and arm strength. He’s a big, physical feller who is regarded as having above-average raw power along with the potential for an average hit tool—a combination that would allow him better-than-average offensive production. Defensively, Betts’ arm also falls in the above-average to plus range. There are concerns about his conditioning (since resolved, at least for the time being), receiving and signability (he’s committed to the University of Tennessee), but none of those aspects scared off the Rays.
