Rays Outright Wilking Rodriguez and Rich Thompson to Durham

The Rays made two roster moves yesterday, outrighting pitcher Wilking Rodriguez and outfielder Rich Thompson from the 40-man roster.

Rodriguez’s slip through the waiver wire is surprising and disheartening. When Rodriguez does pitches, he shows a fastball that can touch the mid-90s and a potentially good curveball. Unfortunately, he hasn’t pitched a lot lately, having missed most of the past two seasons with shoulder problems. On the surface, keeping Rodriguez in the system looks like a good thing. But that no other team found his upside worthy of a 40-man roster spot may indicate the severity of his shoulder woes. It’s a double-edged sword, similar to the Albert Suarez move earlier in the year.

Contrariwise, Thompson’s passing through waivers is expected. His return to the majors provided human-interest fodder, and he is a genuinely good person by all accounts. Still, Thompson’s skill set is readily available throughout the Triple-A level, which negates any need to protect or secure his services.

Both moves created room on the roster for players returning from the 60-day disabled list.
