Rays Picks in Rounds Five Through 10

Round Five

J.D. (or Jonathan) Davis has a Cal State Fullerton commitment and is a 6-foot-3 third baseman known for his strength and pop.

Round Six

Speaking of Cal State Fullerton, Christopher Floethe is a 6-foot-3 senior from the Titans who missed the 2010 season due to Tommy John surgery. The Diamondbacks drafted Floethe last June anyways, but he decided against signing and jumps up more than 20 rounds for his patience. According to the Cal State site, he models himself after Brandon Webb.

Round Seven

The Rays drafted Ryan Carpenter out of high school in 2008, but he chose to attend Gonzaga instead. Three years later, here they are again. Carpenter is a big lefty who had a low-90s fastball and a good changeup, but needed work on a breaking pitch. Over the season, I saw a tweet that he was sitting in the high-80s, but I don’t know what—if anything—came of that. He pitched well in the Cape Cod League.

Round Eight

John Alexander is a 6-foot-6 first baseman with a commitment to UC Irvine. According to a somewhat recent article, he plans to attend class if not drafted high—although who knows what definition of high he is using.

Round Nine

James (or Matt, evidently) Rice is a senior catcher from Western Kentucky. He stands 6-foot-3 and was drafted by the Yankees with the last pick of the 2010 draft. Per the college’s official site, he threw out around 30 percent of basestealers this season.

Round 10

Jacob Fario is a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher from Gahr High School who is signed to pitch for Cal State Fullerton.
