Rays Recall Alex Torres, Chris Archer

Chris Archer and Alex Torres have replaced Jeff Beliveau and Josh Lueke on the 25-man roster, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.

First the unsurprising part of the swap. Archer is Saturday afternoon’s starter, and so his recall was a given. Likewise for Beliveau’s demotion. The other part of the swap stems from circumstance. Last night/this morning’s game forced the Rays’ hand. Either they could roll with a four-man bullpen for the next day or two, or make a move. Since Lueke was the only reliever with an option he is the one to go.

The interesting part is what happens next, as Torres may need to hang around for a few days. The Rays are running out of pitchers on the 40-man roster to recall. Brandon Gomes and Frank De Los Santos are injured while Jake Odorizzi, Alex Colome, Jeff Beliveau, and Lueke are in the 10-day window where they cannot be recalled unless an injury occurs. All this leaves three healthy pitchers on the 40-man roster who are eligible for recall: Mike Montgomery, Enny Romero, and Felipe Rivero—none of whom appear ready for the show. They could also make a trade or claim a live arm off waivers, were either avenue available.

Shy of that the Rays could use their vacant 40-man roster spot to add a Durham reliever, possibly someone like Kirby Yates or Adam Liberatore—or another reliever they may have added in the future—to get through these tough times.
