Rays recall Jake McGee; Option Mike Ekstrom

After making us wait nearly two weeks after roster expansion, the Rays have officially recalled left-handed pitching prospect Jake McGee. In a non-mandatory – but corresponding – move the team returned Mike Ekstrom to Durham. Right now, I see no other reason behind the Ekstrom move except to help the Bulls bullpen as they play for an International League championship.

Since his promotion from the Double-A rotation to the Triple-A bullpen, McGee has struck out 27 batters and walked just three in 17.1 innings. The Rays currently have one playoff roster exemption for a pitcher – meaning McGee and Jeremy Hellickson could be fighting for one playoff spot. Should another pitcher (Lance Cormier) hit the DL, there would be room for both.

I thought I read you can’t put players on the DL after September 1 or some such?
